Tardive Dyskinesia: Power in the Diagnosis A CLOSER LOOK VIDEO

Tardive dyskinesia, or TD, is a late-onset movement disorder that affects multiple parts of the body but, most frequently, the face. Tardive dyskinesia is an unpredictable consequence of long-term treatment with antipsychotics. It is crucial to see a specialist and get properly diagnosed in order to get help in managing your TD.

Clozapine - The main drawback is that it can affect your bone marrow, leading to a shortage of white cells. This makes you vulnerable to infection. If this happens, the medication is stopped at once so that the bone marrow can recover. So, if you take Clozapine you will need weekly blood tests for the first 6 months and 2 weekly blood tests after that. It can also cause weight gain,  constipation, over-production of saliva and make epileptic fits more likely.  Clozapine is usually only suggested after at least two other antipsychotics have been tried. It is a difficult drug to monitor and can be difficult to take, but some people find that overall it gives them a much better quality of life.

Drug-induced Movement Disorders - Movement Disorder Society

Tics are often classified not as involuntary movements but as unvo luntary movements. This means that people are able to suppress the actions for a time. Doctors once believed that certain medications, including some used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, induced tics in children that were prone to them. Newer studies, though, suggest this is not the case.

Twitches. Unlike tics, the majority of muscle twitches are isolated occurrences, not repeated actions. Muscle twitches are also known as myoclonic jerks. They are entirely involuntary and cannot be controlled or suppressed.

Health Canada has completed a safety review of the serotonin blocking drugs dolasetron (ANZEMET), granisetron (KYTRIL and generics), ondansetron (ZOFRAN and generics) and palonosetron (ALOXI), which are used for treating nausea and vomiting. This review identified a potential risk of serotonin syndrome. Serotonin syndrome occurs when serotonin, a chemical normally found in the body, accumulates to high levels. This usually happens with combinations of certain serotonin drugs, but may also occur with a single drug. Recognizing and treating serotonin syndrome  Recognition and treatment of serotonin syndrome Recognition and treatment of serotonin syndrome Recognition and treatment of serotonin syndrome Recognition and treatment of serotonin syndrome

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome

Characteristic symptoms usually develop over a few days and often in the following order:

Altered mental status: Usually the earliest manifestation is a change in mental status, often an agitated delirium, and may progress to lethargy or unresponsiveness (reflecting encephalopathy).

Motor abnormalities: Patients may have generalized, severe muscle rigidity (sometimes with simultaneous tremor, leading to cogwheel rigidity), or, less often, dystonias, chorea, or other abnormalities. Reflex responses tend to be decreased.

Health Canada and FDA Advisories for Antidepressants

Health Canada and FDA advisories. Health Canada and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) have issued advisories to patients, families, and health professionals to closely monitor for warning signs of suicidal behaviour in children and adults younger than 25 who take antidepressants. This is especially important at the beginning of treatment or when doses are changed.

Canadian ADHD black-box warnings

Health Canada has required addition of a series of black box warnings about the suicidal potential of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medications with concerns based on individual and clinical level considerations.Government of Canada and Healthy Canadians. ADHD drugs may increase risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviours in some people; benefits still outweigh risks. (accessed Oct 27, 2015) However, these warnings have failed to take into account population-level evidence showing that increased use of this medication for children and adolescents with ADHD in Canada has been associated with a reduced suicide risk in adolescents.

Search the Drug Side Effect Database   A side effect is usually regarded as an undesirable secondary effect which occurs in addition to the desired therapeutic effect of a drug or medication.
