60 minutes with tourette syndrome
LONDON, England – The dangers of tongue piercing have been made clear by new research that will be published in the May 24 edition of the British Dental Journal (BDJ). The paper details a recent case where a pierced tongue healed over a barbell - the piece that is secured under the tongue - totally encasing the bar. The patient then required surgery to expose the bar and solve the problem. A combination of poor craftsmanship and an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the tongue of the individual concerned is blamed for the problem according to the research. The tongue was able to heal over the barbell because the shank of the barbell was insufficiently long. The excessive fluid in the tongue then caused a higher-than-normal level of swelling which allowed the tongue to enclose the ornament
Oral piercing - a trend growing in popularity in recent years - has many complications associated with it according to the paper. Some of them are life threatening. The most common problems are pain and swelling - the latter potentially leading to partial blockage of the airway. Other problems resulting from oral piercing include chipped or cracked teeth and the recession of the gum material around teeth.
As unwelcome as these problems are, they are minor in comparison with reported prolonged bleeding and collapsing due to low blood pressure. Piercing of oral sites also carries with it a high risk of infection - with the possibility of transmission of organisms such as HIV, Hepatitis B and C, Herpes Simplex Virus and candida.
The report warns dentists that they must be prepared to cope with the growing number of patients with pierced oral sites and be prepared to tackle associated dental issues such as damage to the teeth.
The paper was written by Tamer Theodossy, Visiting Specialist Registrar at University College London Hospitals NHS Trust.
