Question about second hand store

Wondering how other foster parents feel about shopping at a second hand store for children’s clothing. I’m not comfortable going to a second hand shop. We shop at Wal-Mart and Sears and personally have never shopped second hand. I was told that I should check out the second hand stores for the foster kids. My question for foster parents.....Do we have to do this if we are not comfortable shopping second hand. Maybe I’m too rigid in my way.....just want to know how others feel.

I have shopped in a resale store before, but like you normally shop in Walmart or simillar. We treat out Fosters as we do our own children.

You have a subsidy that the agencies pays back to the foster parent. You can buy clothes where ever you want to buy them...but you can't go over that budget. It goes by age group.

At one time I found that baby clothing could be bought at a good price and be in great condition, particularly popular brand names. In the past year I notice that the prices have gone up considerably and one can buy new clothing on sale at a comparable price. I keep my eyes open for good sales and things which could be carried on into another season. There is nothing wrong with shopping in a second hand store if the clothing are in great condition. That selection combined with new clothing would be very acceptable. I would have done it with my own Children. As long as the kids are dressed appropriately, clean and nice, it doesn't matter where the clothing is purchased. The budget does not allow for designer clothes unless you are willing to buy second hand or reach into your own pocket (which I have done many times).

In this economy thrift and gently used stoes are a wonderfull resourse within our community. Once Upon a Child stores not only carry gently used children's items they also carry a large selection of new baby and toddler products as well as a wonderfull selection of Mellissa & Doug Puzzels, games and art supplies. You can get your Webkinz's there as well at the lowest price around. All these products make great shower and birthday gifts. Their gently used clothing are all top quality brand name at at 50 to 75% off retail. Your kids can dress in the latest Gap, Root's, Disney clothing etc. and no one knows they are second hand. I save a fortune, my kids look great and that free's up money for a day outing for the kids or other essential's. Smart shopping and savings, I'm there.
